Thanks David for posting such an informative article about the history of the "Pledge of Allegiance." Many of us can remember when the words "Under God," were added. The changes in the original pledge, have generally been accepted by the citizens of the U.S. however, with the diversion within the U.S. it would be very scary now to entertain any changes except perhaps to eliminate, "Under God." This phrase seems redundant since our nation is under God. Why must we constantly call attention to this fact? God is the all powerful, the ruler, the king of the Universe. We are in his constant view. Our actions are all well documented in his daily log. Treating people who are different than we are in a diminutive way, does not seem to me like the way God would prefer, if indeed, we adhere to Christianity and the teachings and works of Jesus Christ. Our nation was founded on principles of freedom. The African Americans, women, and now Hispanics have had to work very hard to achieve freedom and justice in this country. The battle still rages. Under a Democratic Rule, fighting for justice is a goal. Equality is much harder to achieve, but what happens if we fail to continue to pursue it?

Interesting idea, for people to post anecdotes about their neighborhoods or precincts. Might make the Democratic community and others feel more connected. Maybe you will create a neighborly light version of what Nelson Mandela did in uniting his country's citizens by generating interest in their national rugby team (the story of the movie Invictus), if you think about it.
In the case of these little donkeys and your questions about them in your story: The new ones are named Jack and Jill. And farmers put donkeys with their cows to fight off coyotes. These three are in a separate pasture than the cows for now so they can get to know one another and, in the case of the little ones, gain needed weight and health. Newbie nips at the cows because he is too thrilled with them, in his teenage boy way. He isn't jealous of them; he is crazy about them... too much so, if you follow. Hopefully those three are becoming a happy little herd together. Donkeys are happiest when they aren't alone, from what I have heard and read. Yes, Stacey and Betty Cornatzer have long days and work hard across the way on their cattle farm.
I will look forward to more of your stories and other ones posted too.

The Democratic Women of Davie County are truly the backbones of our Democratic Party here in Davie Co. Through blistering heat the women set up a wonderful yard sale display and Ice Cream Social. For those who missed the event, they really missed some good buys. Great Books, many unused toys, useful appliances, and clothing were sold at bargain bargain prices. The ice cream was cold delicious and served graciously, thanks to our faithful Democrat, Betty Naylor. But best of all was hearing from our local Democratic Candidates, Jeff Plott who is running for Davie County Commissioner and John Coley who is running for Sheriff of Davie County. Chris Anderson, due to a prior engagement, was unable to make the Social. All these candidates are wonderful and will represent Davie County well. Billy Kennedy, our delightful, "down to earth" Democratic Candidate for 5th District Congressional Seat graciously took out time for an interview with "TheDavieDemocrat" before addressing the whole group and answering their questions. Billy was traveling with his wife, who addressed the Democratic Women's Group in June. I especially liked what Kennedy said about government helping people who are losing their homes because of job losses in the County and District. He told us that "Government is not the enemy." Unlike the incumbent Congressional member, Kennedy wants to help the people of the 5th District instead of voting against all legislation that would be beneficial to them instead of voting for legislation that would help the big insurance companies, big oil companies, and big banks, who have taken advantage of the working class people in our country. I am always inspired and given new hope for our wonderful county.

Christopher Hayes' article "Deficits of Mass Destruction" was right on the money. Unless we can end our overseas wars and let the Bush tax cuts for the rich expire, our economy will never recover. How can anyone who is supposed to represent the interests of the people vote against unemployment extensions saying they will lead to higher deficits and at the same time protect tax breaks for the rich? This sounds like Voodoo Economics to me. Reagan's trickle down economic theory was a major bust for the majority of Americans. With "trickle down" and massive deregulation of our banking system, we are now faced with the greatest recession since the Great Depression. We need to look forward for solutions, not go back to failed policies.
